Ōtāhuhu, Māngere, Ōtara, Papatoetoe and Manurewa have a lot of mid-century family housing, often single-storey on a decent section, and many of these homes have had generations of occupants and small alterations. Renovating one usually means working out what earlier changes were made behind the linings, then fixing that before new work goes on.
